In addition to fiber, I have a passion for both color and texture. It is wonderful to find a way to combine all of my passions into the perfect batt or rolag. I love taking a concept like a pencil or a lightsaber or a birthday cake and representing them in wool.

I’m very excited about my new Twinkle Kits. A batt is combined with a string of LED lights that you can use to core spin. The result is a super cool wool covered decoration that is perfect to decorate any crafty home or space.

Vendor Spotlight: San Juan Alpacas, Hearthside Fibers, Kitchen Counter Crafter

We’ve been working through all the vendor applications, and are just about done notifying everyone who’s applied. If you applied and haven’t heard, we promise you will very soon! (It was a long list.) Before we start mixing in the newbies, let’s meet a few more of our veteran vendors, shall we?

We missed Kim of San Juan Alpacas last year, and are thrilled to have her back in 2016! She’s always got tons of luscious alpaca goods, including finished pieces with no assembly required. Hearthside Fibers is a mainstay on our vendor floor; but Lael and Larry always bring something new and fun! Jennie of Kitchen Counter Crafter joined us for the first time in 2015, and we’re excited to see what new bags and accessories she’s cooking up for us this year. Pictures, please!

My grandmother taught me to knit at age 6. I’ve been knitting ever since! I started San Juan Alpacas in 2001. Now, I have 7 alpacas and enjoy selling all sorts of soft, lovely alpaca goods: yarn, hand knits, knitting kits, blankets and socks.

Vendor Spotlight: Knitter’s Journey and Essential Fibers

Happy Monday! Time for another preview of the vendors we’re lining up for April.

Bev at Knitter’s Journey is well-known for her awesome knit-with-wire kits — beads and stones give them tons of extra sparkle — but she’s got plenty of other goodies in store, too. Essential Fiber joined us for the first time last year, but Michelle is coming back (all the way from Virginia!) with her vast semisolid color range. Check out a few of the things they’ve got on tap for April.

More vendor previews coming on Thursday!

Vendor Spotlight: cjkoho Designs and Yarn Geek Fibers

We’ve been poring over the vendor applications, and oh boy, you guys are in for a treat. We’re really having to make some tough choices this year!

In the meantime, let’s start meeting the vendors already lined up for April. We asked some returning vendors to share featured products along with what they MOST want you to know about them, so let the drooling commence! We’re starting off with the first two vendors that signed up to come back, both longtime friends of YarnCon, and two dyers who know a LOT about color: Carla of cjkoho Designs, and Sarah of Yarn Geek Fibers.

Gearing up!

Are you as thrilled as I am that holiday knitting is over? As much as I love making things for my family and friends (no really, I do), I usually reach my crafting-for-others limit by Christmas Eve, when I’m glued to the couch, furiously working last rows and weaving in ends.

So the arrival of January means I’m getting back to knitting for myself, and while I’m not one for resolutions, my first task is to tame my UFO pile. I always have multiple projects going for variety, but the “put-aside” queue has become, um, a bit unwieldy. I’m tackling my languishing sweaters first; they DO take up the most space in the pile, after all.

UFO 1: Rosamund’s Cardigan

I’m actually looking forward to wearing this, and even have buttons already made for it. But I found a glaring mistake three inches back, put it aside, and just can’t seem to get around to fixing the error. And so it sits.

UFO 2: Bonnie Cabled Pullover

Love the yarn (Malabrigo FTW!), love the color, love the pattern. So why has this been in hibernation for *cough cough* more than three years? Short answer: the needles. I’m a small-needle knitter and rarely venture larger than a 6 – so doing the whole front and 2/3 the back on size 7 was about my quota — apparently three years’ worth.

So that’s my plan for the start of 2016. I make no guarantees how far I’ll get, as just the words “new beginnings” makes my fingers itch with start-itis… so much pretty yarn I could be using to cast on new projects instead!

What fibery projects are you tackling this month?

January also means shifting YarnCon planning into high gear! As we make our lists (and check them not only twice, but six or seven times), what are YOU most looking forward to seeing at YarnCon this year? A particular vendor or teacher? A special item you’ll be shopping for? A pattern you’ve been saving for *just the right yarn*? Leave us a comment below!

Wisconsin Sheep & Wool; Midwest Knits Project

I spent last weekend at the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival in Jefferson, WI, helping out the comedically talented Carl at the Bijou Basin Ranch booth. In between fondling the yak/bamboo blend and taking Flat-Stanley-style pictures of Lego Spider-Man, I had a great time hanging out with current YarnCon friends and making possible new ones. It was thrilling to see our save-the-date bookmarks on vendor tables throughout the Country Store, and it was a good thing I’d brought more along to replenish their supplies!

Emily of Bricolage Studios was our next-door neighbor, which facilitated a few “Home Improvement”-style chats through the booth dividers. Thanks, Emily, for not minding the many folks I sent over to use your mirror! Rita (Yarn Hollow) and Carla (Cjkoho Designs) had me in stitches every time I headed past their combined space to the trashcan or the parking lot; there was no sneaking past those two without exchanging a joke or an idea for next year. Jeanette from Sun Valley Fibers let Spidey crawl all over her booth without calling for Security. My pal Sam tagged along for the ride up from Chicago, and more than repaid the favor by scouting new vendors for next year: at the hotel Saturday night, she handed me more than a dozen business cards from interesting vendors to research. Thanks for a great time, y’all!

Tell us: who would YOU most like to see bring their goods to next year’s YarnCon? Our mission is to spotlight regional, independent fiber- and fiber-related artists of all types, so if you’ve got an indie fave we should check out, hit us up with a name and a link in the comments below.

And speaking of regional: Midwestern Knits is a book project helmed by Allyson Dykhuizen, fiber world tour de force, together with fellow knitwear designer Carina Spencer. The book promises 12 patterns inspired by the stories and culture of the Midwest while highlighting regionally-sourced yarns. Allyson has supported YarnCon from the very first: variously as an instructor, vendor, and sponsor, always with her unflagging enthusiasm and positive energy. Please help us support this endeavor of hers in return! Allyson and Carina are taking pre-orders and raising funds for the project via Kickstarter, with only two weeks and a little less than half of their goal to go. All the details are here.

And now for some Lego Spider-Man in action:

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

YOU.ARE.AMAZING. Every year, we plan and organize and promote YarnCon, and every year, we wonder if anyone will show up. And every year, the Chicago fiber community – that’s you guys – blows us away. Over 1000 attendees walked through the doors of the Journeyman Plumbers’ Union Hall this year, and the level of excitement and enthusiasm just continues to grow.

05262014e

This year’s event was our seventh, and from the moment the first vendor walks in for setup, it feels like a family reunion: greetings, hugs, the latest news traded after a long winter. Strangers admired each other’s handiwork and connected upon recognizing a familiar pattern. One pair of friends swept through the doors at opening time on Saturday morning and were almost the last to leave Saturday evening; they’d spent all day shopping, talking with vendors, taking classes, and mostly just practicing their craft in the expanded lounge area. So many vendors brought new colorways and products they’d cooked up over their hibernation, and we were beyond thrilled to be hosting the debut of Chicago Knits Magazine.

05262014a

We offered more classes, and a wider diversity, than ever before. We created a new vendor section for younger fiber companies, or producers that just didn’t need a full-size booth space. Students from SAIC’s The Politics of Knitting course staged a silent, collaborative knitting performance on Saturday, the results of which were on display at Sunday’s installment.

05262014b

Please feel free to add your pictures of YC2014 to the YarnCon Chicago group on Flickr. We’d love to see your memories in all their glorious color (black and white is cool too, whatever).

Next year’s date is set: April 18th & 19th, 2015 (a little later than usual, due to Easter and venue availability). Some things will be the same: we’ll be at the Plumbers’ Union Hall, a spot we find more to like about every year. There will be lots of fiber, classes, and other enthusiasts to connect with. Everything else? Well, you’ll just have to wait and see. We’re already hard at work on a batch of fresh new ideas!

If you’re not already on our email list, sign up with the “Stay Up-to-Date!” form (at left on the home page; on the right everywhere else on the site). You can also find us on FacebookTwitter, and our Ravelry group, so pick your platform. And on Saturday, June 14th, you can find us in Millennium Park (Boeing Gallery North, near Randolph and Michigan) celebrating World Wide Knit In Public Day. Come out and join us!

To see YarnCon 2014 through different pairs of eyes, check out Knitcircus Podcast #44, the Knitspot blog, Handmade by Stefanie, and Yarn Hoards. If you did a recap of this year’s event, post the link in the comments.

So just, thanks. Thanks for coming, thanks for supporting YarnCon, thanks for spreading the word, thanks for being your awesome, friendly, fiberiffic selves.

Wanna win stuff? Enter the YarnCon raffle!

Who doesn’t love winning? Our incredibly generous and talented vendors and sponsors have hooked us up with the motherlode of fibery goodies, which we’ll be raffling off over the course of the weekend to help support YarnCon and help defray the many expenses of putting on the show. We’ve got yarn and fiber, of course, along with gift certificates, drop spindles, buttons, pattern kits, stitch markers, Windy City Knitting Guild memberships, and so much more.

We’ll be drawing every hour, and posting the winners on a board in the vendor hall, so check it frequently as you’re shopping and attending classes. You do not need to be present to win, though – if you’ve already gone home, we’ll contact you, so make sure your tickets are filled out legibly with your phone and email.

Tickets will only be $1 each, so stock up on singles! Help us continue to grow YarnCon into an amazing celebration of independent fibery goodness, and win stuff too!

Vendors list going up!

Hey y’all, check out the beginnings of the vendor list. We’ll add to it every day as the listing information arrives from our accepted vendors, so keep checking back to see the latest. (Psst – if YOU are an accepted vendor and haven’t sent your listing info & image yet, well, what are you waiting for?)
