Workshops are scheduled in 1, 2, and 3 hour blocks on Saturday, and 1 hour blocks on Sunday. We encourage you to limit your classes to 1 or 2 hours, the 3 hour classes are harder to sell. YarnCon is a vendor driven show, so people come primarily to shop, and 3 hour classes take up a goodly chunk of the day. If you think 3 hours is the way to go, go for it, and be ready to really help sell that class. We are also looking to add kids classes, especially on Sunday.
What you need to know:
We are a little unconventional at YarnCon in how we handle our workshops. YarnCon is above all a local show, and a vendor-driven show, which means most of the people that attend YarnCon come to shop. However, we highly value the educational component of a fiber festival, and every year we try new ways to showcase the teaching talent of the Chicago area, and we happily welcome teachers from all over the nation (and world). Unlike shows at convention centers with classrooms, we have a large shared room with dividers, so the classes are small, 15 students is the maximum (3 is the minimum.)
Part of the local focus means that we do not have a travel budget, so for those of you from out of town, we are sorry, but we do not yet have it in our budget to cover your travel expenses.
For those who have taught with us before, please read over the fees closely, as they have changed this year.
$30 the first hour, plus $15 each additional hour is the class fee that students pay. So, a 2 hour class costs attendees $45, excluding any materials fees. The teacher gets 50% of this plus $5 per student for any students over the first 8 (so, you get $5 each for students number 9-15.) We hope this gives you the incentive to help us promote the classes. YarnCon is a completely volunteer-run effort, so we appreciate the help in bringing in more students.
As for supplies, you may sell kits or materials to your students yourself, or include a list of required items in your class description.
Payments will be made via PayPal or check starting on Tuesday, April 4th.
Once classes have been selected, we will notify teachers and we will ask for a brief bio, and pictures we can use to promote your class.
